Olympia Chimney Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Olympia Chimney Damper Repair: The Doylestown Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace damper parts on Olympia Chimney fireplaces and stoves throughout Doylestown, and we carry the common replacement components on the truck. A typical damper repair in this area runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on what failed and whether the damper frame itself needs work. Most Doylestown homeowners discover the problem the first cold night in October: the handle won’t move, smoke rolls back into the living room, or the damper plate drops open with a clunk and won’t stay shut.

If that sounds familiar, this page covers what goes wrong, what it costs to fix, and what you can safely check before calling us.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

Olympia Chimney has been making dampers, caps, and liner components for decades, and their parts show up in a wide range of factory-built fireplaces and freestanding stoves across Bucks County. We work on the full span of their damper line: cast-iron throat dampers, round top-sealing dampers, and the stainless steel cable-driven units that came on many 1990s and 2000s factory builds. Top Hat Chimney is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, but we stock and install their parts because we’ve found them to be consistently well made.

The gotcha with Olympia dampers is measurement. The throat damper for a 36-inch fireplace is not interchangeable with the one for a 42-inch firebox, even though they look near-identical on a parts diagram. Before calling, look for a label plate inside the firebox opening, usually on the left or right masonry return. If the plate is gone or unreadable, measure the firebox opening width at the front, and the damper frame inside at its widest point. We’ll match both.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Olympia’s own replacement parts are solid and worth the money when the original lasted 20-plus years. For some older models, though, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a foundry that makes the same cast iron pattern costs less and performs identically. We’ll tell you honestly which way to go on your model. We also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco products, so if your damper issue is really a liner or crown problem in disguise, we can handle the whole job.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle spins but nothing moves. The linkage between the handle and the damper plate has stripped or the cotter pin sheared. You’ll usually feel a free-spinning handle with no resistance.
  • Smoke curls into the room when you light a fire. The damper isn’t opening fully, either from rust on the hinge points or a warped plate. Cold chimneys and cold dampers make this worse, which is why it shows up on the first fire of the season.
  • The damper won’t stay closed in summer. Condensation rises through the chimney in humid PA summers. Over years, it corrodes the pivot hardware until the plate sags open. You’ll notice a draft when the fireplace is cold.
  • The plate is visibly warped or cracked. Cast iron fatigues with repeated heat cycling. Once a crack runs from the hinge pin outward, the plate won’t seat flush, and the damper never fully closes.
  • Creosote builds up around the damper frame faster than it should. A damper that won’t close completely lets moist air up the flue, which accelerates creosote formation just above the damper. We see this a lot in Doylestown’s older homes with masonry chimneys.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest range for damper work in Doylestown. The price depends on access, the part itself, and whether the frame is reusable.

  • Damper plate and linkage replacement: $185 to $280 installed
  • Complete damper assembly replacement: $260 to $420 installed
  • Frame repair or re-bedding (masonry work): Add $80 to $150

Parts for a typical cast-iron throat damper run $40 to $120 wholesale. The rest is labor, and the labor is getting the old rusted hardware out without damaging the firebox. Every quote is flat-price, given before we start, and the number you hear on the phone is the number on the invoice. No surprises at the door.

Every damper repair we complete is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, one call brings Wendell and his crew back at no additional cost. We also offer $40 off any repair over $200, and 10% off for seniors and veterans, always.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: Is the handle loose or stripped at the shaft? Does the damper plate move at all when you work the handle? Can you see obvious rust or a cracked plate with a flashlight? That kind of look gives you a good idea of what you’re dealing with.

What you shouldn’t do is reach up into the damper frame and start yanking on rusted linkage or trying to free a stuck plate with force. Older cast-iron dampers sit above the firebox opening, often with decades of creosote and rust holding things together. If the plate drops while your hand is in there, you’re looking at a serious injury. And if the damper is stuck because the flue liner above it has failed, no amount of plate fiddling will fix the real problem.

Tell us what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you what it needs. If you’re in Doylestown or anywhere we serve, call (484) 600-2977 and Wendell or one of the crew will walk you through it over the phone.
