• Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney. The cap’s mounting collar has rusted through or the sealant at the flue tile has broken down, letting rain run down the inside of the flue into the chase or attic.
• A rattle or scrape when the wind picks up. The clamping band has worked loose. The cap is still up there, but it’s moving against the flue tile, and every gust widens the gap.
• Birds, squirrels, or a nest smell in the firebox. The mesh side screening has torn or detached. Once a bird gets in, the mess and the smell are only the start; nesting material against a hot flue is a fire hazard.
• Rust streaks running down the side of the chimney. The cap’s finish has failed and the steel underneath is bleeding. On a Famco cap, this is often a sign the cap is older and the stainless has pitted past the point of simple cleaning.
