• Handle spins with no resistance. The cast-iron damper plate has detached from the pivot rod, usually because the hinge pin rusted through. The cable version of this failure means the cable snapped or slipped off the pulley inside the flue.
• Cold air pours into the room on a calm day. The damper plate is stuck open or warped, and it’s no longer sealing against the frame. This is the one people notice fastest in Doylestown winters, because the draft is strong enough to move curtains.
